Phase One Return To School Model

return to school model

Dear parents, carers and students,

Attached is Henry Kendall High’s Phase One Return to School Model. The key details are outlined in the points below the graphic. However there are a number of other pieces of information that I need you to be aware of.

I have been particularly mindful of Year 12 and specifically the courses containing a HSC major work. In most instances our students are well up to date with the content aspects of their courses, however it is access to specialist equipment, spaces or teachers around major work or performance courses where students are encountering difficulty. Our model is designed to give intensive time to students in each of these courses by working for an entire day with their teacher.

Our special education unit will return to school based on program or class groups. Our special education staff will contact families directly to discuss arrangements.

Teaching staff are still required to deliver a full suite of online learning for all of their classes, and to now also be at school two days a week to supervise and guide the students who are here. I ask our community to keep in mind the additional pressure that this will bring, and be understanding if teachers are a little slower to respond to requests or provide feedback. The school is monitoring student engagement with online learning, and our Deputy Principal’s, Year Advisers and Student Services team will be following up.

Some parents will make the choice to keep their children at home despite the one day a week return to school. If you do so I ask that you contact the school office to inform us. Any student who is kept home, is engaging with their online learning, and parents have informed the school will not be marked absent, but we do need to know.

Social distancing will be very important during this phase of the return to school. Class sizes will be reduced to 10 students, however the playground is a space where it will be easy for students to forget as they are busy catching up with friends. I again ask that parents have the conversation at home with your son/daughter about the importance of maintaining social distancing once returning to school.

Parent meetings at school are not being held at this time. If parents do need to raise matters with us that would normally be done by attending a meeting, please contact us and we will arrange for an alternative process.

From Monday 11 May the canteen will reopen. Please be aware that at this stage there will be a reduced menu available, and there will be no service before school.

The school has certainly not been the same without our wonderful student body. We are looking forward to seeing those smiling faces back from Monday, but school will still be very different for a while yet. How long I am not able to say, but this fabulous school will make it work – we always do.

Yours Sincerely,

Andrew Backhouse
Principal
