Year 12 Biology

Year 12 Biology Excursion

On Thursday 19 June 2025, Year 12 biology caught the train and light rail to the Disease Museum at the University of New South Wales. We had a lecture from one of the curators at the museum relating to infectious and non-infectious diseases. Following this, we spent a couple of hours in the museum looking at all the different specimens of diseases.

We then caught the light rail to Circular Key and ferry to Taronga Zoo. The zoo staff took us on a night time tour up to our accommodation via lots of different animals and enclosures. A mother and baby seal were the favourites, darting around and calling out in their pool. After a delicious dinner was had in the dining area we went on another night tour to look at a range of animals including koalas, lions and tigers. Whilst the zoo keepers were telling us about the lions, a massive lion was stalking Riley through the perspex glass and snuck up right beside him. Five minutes later another lion did the exact same thing. At the end of the night we got to pet some lizards and a snake.

The next morning after breakfast we did a “behind the scenes” tour of some of the enclosures and had another lecture from a zoo keeper regarding genetics. The lecture was in a room with some superb parrots and two potoroos. Then it was on to the typical zoo tour like a tourist, ending up at the seal show.
