Creative arts

In creative arts, students discover a variety of art forms through a study of dance, drama, music and visual arts.

The Creative & Performing Arts Faculty at Henry Kendall High School is a vibrant and diverse environment where students and staff celebrate their skills, talents and passions together. Our staff come from creative backgrounds and are immersed in experiences that they now bring to the classroom to share with students. This shared experience is important to us in subjects that can be deeply personal and expressive to each and every one of us. The space we provide for students is underpinned by a strategy of discovery, with guidance and advice provided along the way that seeks to make a connection with our students, the way they learn and what they need to discover in themselves.

The faculty provides engaging and comprehensive experiences in learning across the creative curriculum from Year 7 to HSC in Music, Visual Art, Drama and Photography.

Stage 4 (Years 7 and 8) will complete the mandatory Visual Art and Music courses that set the foundations for learning in the Elective Years (9-12). Students will be offered subject choices in addition to Music and Visual Art in Stage 5 (9-10) in Photography and Drama, building upon fundamental skills and focusing in on identify talents and skills. Many students will then complete a HSC pattern of study in the Creative and Performing Arts.

Extra-curricular activities are an important part of support and development from the classroom and adds to the vibrancy of the faculty. Students are heavily involved in a wide range of performance events, exhibitions and support structures such as Music Industry with strong connections across the school and in the community. Many of our well established events and opportunities include:

♦ A Central Vision Art Exhibition

♦ NextGen Art Exhibition at The University of Newcastle Ourimbah Campus

♦ Performing Arts Night

♦ Central Coast Showcase

♦ Concert Band

♦ Drama Club

♦ Musical Instrument Tuition

...and many more. Our many events are celebrated on our FaceBook page at www.facebook.com/HKHSCAPA if you would like to connect with us and celebrate our students success.

Studying the creative arts, students learn to appreciate, compose, listen, make and perform. Each art form has its own unique knowledge and skills, elements or concepts as well as a capacity to inspire and enrich lives.

Students must study 100 hours of both music and visual arts during Years 7 to 10. They also have an opportunity to further develop their knowledge and skills in other art forms through elective subjects including drama, dance, photography and visual design. Students can then select from a range of courses in Years 11 to 12.
