English holds a special place in curriculum as the mandatory subject from Kindergarten to Year 12. The English Stage 6 Syllabus states that, 'Proficiency in English enables students to take their place as confident, articulate communicators, critical and imaginative thinkers and active participants in society'.

English is also the only mandatory HSC course, and the only subject which must be included in the ATAR calulations. HKHS English teachers are highly experienced at preparing students for the HSC, with six of the seven core English teachers HSC markers or senior markers of many years experience.

In Years 7-10, through the study of spoken, written and visual texts, English 'develops skills to enable students to experiment with ideas and expression to become active, independent learners, to work with each other and reflect on their own learning'. (English Years 7-10 Syllabus)

Although that great twentieth century thinker, Homer Simpson, once said "English? Who needs that? I'm never going to England", English is increasingly the language of international communication and the primary means by which we relate to others. Here in the English faculty we are dedicated to helping all students reach their potential as effective communicators in a diverse and changing society.
