NESA Changes for Year 11 & 12 Students

NESA

Below is a brief update of NESA changes for Year 11 and 12 students to date:

MINIMUM STANDARDS YEAR 12:

Year 12 students yet to meet the HSC minimum standard can now sit each minimum standard reading, writing or numeracy test six times in 2020. NESA recognises students may have had their access to the online tests limited due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and has made this decision to ensure students have a fair and reasonable opportunity to sit the short, online tests.

The number of calendar days between reattempts has been reduced to 14 days for Year 12 in 2020. Please contact Mrs Wearne for more information.

CHANGES TO 2020 HSC:

Requirements for the English Extension 2 Multimedia short film have been altered. The film will not be examined. Students will instead submit for external marking their rationale and any supporting documentation that elaborates on their directorial vison, production and post-production decisions or intentions. Changes need to be made in consultation with staff by 5th June 2020.

Some performance exams in drama and music have been cancelled or modified:

• For Drama the group performance is cancelled. The Individual project and written paper will be worth 50% each.

• For Music Students must not perform with more than one other musician. Students may use a single accompanist if social distancing requirements are strictly applied during rehearsals and performances. As in previous years, students may use a teacher or family member as their accompanist. Page turners are not permitted. Students can use pre-recorded accompaniment or modify their repertoire. Students can use existing backing tracks or assemble and record their own.

Requirement for students to undertake NESA-mandated VET work placements has been lifted. Students undertaking VET courses in 2020 will remain eligible for the Preliminary or HSC credit units if unable to complete work placement.

Due dates extended and teachers to mark major projects in Visual Arts and Industrial Technology Timber:

• Visual Arts. To ensure all students receive an equitable mark, NESA has moved the marking of the Visual Arts: Body of Work from an external mark provided by HSC markers to a mark provided by the teacher. Teachers are best placed to provide a mark as they have been monitoring each student’s progress on their projects and body of work since the beginning of the HSC year.

• Industrial technology Timber: To ensure all students receive an equitable mark, NESA has moved the marking of the following from an external mark provided by HSC markers to a mark provided by the teacher:

More time given to schools and parents to submit evidence for disability provisions for the exams

Schools given the discretion to make decisions about the number and weighting of HSC formal assessment tasks. Staff at HKHS have been working through this process and are applying amendments if considered necessary. Students are being notified of any changes in their online classroom platforms.
