What do an evening gown dyed with coffee and decorated with origami cranes, a high-fashion raincoat stitched from discarded umbrella skins and a nest of tables paved in old 78 vinyl records have in common?

They are all the works of HSC students at Gosford's Henry Kendall High School and all three will feature in the Powerhouse Museum's DesignTECH exhibition running until April 18. DesignTECH is an annual exhibition of outstanding major design projects from HSC design and technology students around NSW.

Henry Kendall High head teacher technological and applied studies Russell Trimmer said it was "fairly prestigious to be nominated".

That is not the only artistic success for Henry Kendall students, with seven industrial arts and technology students nominated for InTech 2010, which includes displays at the Hands on Expo this month and the Sydney Timber and Working with Wood Show at Fox Studios in June.

Students can make their major projects in timber, metal, multimedia, electronics, graphics and automotive focus areas.

Designs submitted by Henry Kendall High students included a metal pedal car, timber entertainment unit and poker table and four graphic designs incorporating sophisticated architectural software.

"Nearly 300 candidates were nominated for InTech 2010 and for work to be nominated it must be extremely well made, showing a high level of skill and quality," said Chris Myers, Henry Kendall High computing studies head teacher.

Other high schools to be nominated for InTech 2010 are: Killara, Pennant Hills, Henry Lawson, Model Farms, Bellingen, Kiama, Maitland Grossmann, Alstonville, Blakehurst, Homebush Boys, Hunter Performing Arts, Yanco and Farrer Memorial Agricultural high schools.

DesignTECH is presented by the Board of Studies NSW in association with the NSW Department of Education and Training.

Following the Powerhouse exhibition a number of exhibitions, together with selections of regional projects, will travel to galleries across NSW.
