English

English holds a special place in curriculum as the only mandatory subject from Kindergarten to Year 12. We are a faculty who love to read novels and watch films, and we seek to share this passion with our students.

To study English is to discover the power of language and its ability to shape our understanding of ourselves and the world. At Henry Kendall High School, we choose texts that ignite curiosity, spark imagination, and celebrate the diverse voices within our school community.

Beyond the classroom, students are encouraged to share their voices and passions through a range of enriching experiences. From representing the school in public speaking and debating to contributing creative work or serving on the editorial team of the Bellbird Literary Magazine, our students develop confidence and a sense of purpose as communicators. We also nurture emerging writers through opportunities such as the What Matters? writing competition, inspiring them to use language to make meaning, spark change and express what truly matters to them.

Our strong partnership with the school library fosters a lifelong love of reading and learning. Through our wide reading program, students are encouraged to explore texts that challenge, inspire and delight. Participation in the Premier’s Reading Challenge further nurtures this passion, celebrating perseverance and curiosity as students discover new voices, genres, and perspectives.

We have a proud history of academic success. Our Year 12 students regularly attain Band 6 results in English Standard, Advanced, Extension 1 and Extension 2, and in 2024 Henry Kendall High School was placed in the top 20 comprehensive public schools for HSC achievement in English Standard and Advanced.

Although that great twentieth century thinker, Homer Simpson, once said "English? Who needs that? I'm never going to England", English is increasingly the language of international communication and the primary means by which we relate to others. Here in the English Faculty we are dedicated to helping all students reach their potential as effective communicators in a diverse and changing society.
