Applied Learning

Applied Learning is a distinctive Stage 4 subject at Henry Kendall High School, designed to empower students with essential skills for success both in and beyond the classroom. As the only school on the Central Coast to offer Applied Learning as a stand-alone subject, we take pride in providing a unique, innovative learning experience that sets our students apart.

At the heart of Applied Learning is Project Based Learning (PBL), a dynamic, hands-on approach that immerses students in real-world challenges and authentic tasks. This method actively cultivates key skills such as communication, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and citizenship - competencies that are critical for thriving in today’s complex world.

Our students are not passive recipients of knowledge; instead, they take full ownership of their learning journey. Each project, while carefully structured to guide students, allows for significant creative freedom. Students are encouraged to draw upon their individual interests and passions, making meaningful decisions that shape the direction and outcomes of their projects. This approach fosters deep engagement and investment in their work, promoting intrinsic motivation and a sense of purpose.

Through Applied Learning, students hone their ability to work collaboratively with peers, developing teamwork skills essential for future academic, professional, and community contexts. They learn to manage their time effectively to meet deadlines, give and receive constructive feedback, and refine their work based on reflection and peer input. Importantly, students also build confidence and competence in presenting their projects to a public audience, enhancing their communication skills and sense of citizenship as they contribute meaningfully to their school and wider community.

Collaboration, a core component of the subject, is explicitly taught and carefully scaffolded by our dedicated teachers. This deliberate guidance supports students in developing independence, resilience, and the interpersonal skills needed to thrive in diverse teams. Our teachers create a supportive learning environment where students feel safe to experiment, take risks, and grow both academically and personally.

By embedding project-based learning within Applied Learning, Henry Kendall High School equips students with practical, transferable skills that prepare them for future challenges and opportunities. This subject not only nurtures academic growth but also shapes well-rounded young people ready to lead, innovate and make a positive impact in their communities.
